I had to go searching around to find it (I'm no history buff and even worse at geography), but I believe Kansas is the wrong color. Though with the whole Bleeding Kansas debacle, and since Kansas was admitted on January 29, 1861, it seems like an understandable mistake to me.
The good news: my kids love "One Dead Spy" and my mom loves it, too, but she found a cover immediately--on the back cover. Apparently Nathan Hale is often misquoted as saying, "I have but one life to give for my country" but he actually said "one life to LOSE for my country" ... or maybe it's the opposite? Anyway, look into it. But don't forget the good news--my 7-yr-old son now wants to learn all about history and asked me to buy him "the whole series" of these books!
heather and Q, great answers, I won't spoil the answering yet by saying who's right. I'll wait a few more days to reveal the error.
Juliana, great news! There are many variations on the actual Nathan Hale quote. There are no reliable witnesses, and many contend he never said the famous words--that they were attributed to him posthumously. It's shrouded in mystery!
Is W Virginia missing the border state coloring? The annotation seems clear enough, but since the map is labeled 1861 maybe they aren't part of the Union yet?
I do agree with Chris. The State of Kanawha was named West Virginia in 1961 and joined the Union two years later in 1963. The headline needs to be changed in the year since, or annotation.

ReplyDeleteNebraska's panhandle doesn't extend far enough into Utah.

ReplyDelete:)It seems to be contagious, seriously. I correct the year is 1861 and 1863, respectively.
