Picture Book Marathon VOTING NOW OPEN!

The Picture Book Marathon is over! I had fun! Twenty-six books; some were good, some were bad, and some were dumb--but I think they were all fun. What do you think? Any favorites? Now is the time to pick your #1 book.

Write your favorite into the comments section. (That's right all you Google Reader followers--you have to come to the actual blog site.) I was going to use one of those polling widgets, where you just click the button next to your favorite title. But then I realized how much I like reading your voting comments. So write them in, tell me what you liked, give me an earful!

The book(s?) with the most votes will get a full, 32 page, Percy-esque treatment here at the Station.

I'll leave the voting open for the rest of the week. Be back tomorrow for something new--a brand new story I think you will like.

  1. How could you ask me to choose? I kind of want all of them!

What I really want is Rapunzel and Jack #3, but I know THAT isn't going to happen.

I'll pick The Big Blizzard, because the topic is dear to my heart.

(But the runners up would have to be The Princess of Cross-Section Kingdom, and then But I Don't Want to Have Feathers!)

  2. Okay, I can't just pick one. Sorry. I like "Rock and Roll Tractor Troll," because he's just so cool. The other is "Blow Wind Blow," for its simplicity. I think kids could have a lot of fun with this one. And the book that inspired you to create this one, gobbled me up.

  3. Tractor Troll

If it were for a real book I would vote Blow Wind Blow and The End, but for blog treatment I like Tractor Troll(with Groundimus Hogg and Kid Mercury as the runners up).

  4. Oh, that's hard! I'll have to say "The Princess of Cross-Section Kingdom."

    ReplyDelete
  5. Big Blizzard!

I love the cover image.. very minimal and cool. Can't wait to see what's under all that snow!

    ReplyDelete
  6. flap flap vroom vroom tweet tweet!

    ReplyDelete
  7. The End.
After that I like Nut Ninjas, and then probably Pterosaur Hospital, but that's not what you're asking about is it?

  8. Aaaaaaaagh! I'm only allowed to pick one? One!

    *breathes*

Okay. If I'm limited to just one I'd choose the Fort. I guess it really takes me back to when we gathered all the blankets and some really heavy books to use as counterweights and covered our rooms. Of course, you had to be careful not to shift the blankets around too much or someone was liable to get a pile of books on their head.

Oh, wait! Blow Wind Blow looks like a ton of fun, too. I really want to see what's over by that castle. And Rock and Roll Tractor Troll--is it just me or does the troll look like some real rock and roll singers, and I love the gnome. And . . . So sorry, you did say just one, didn't you?

  9. The Very Hungry Computer Virus!

    or

But I Don't Want To Have Feathers!

    Both potential works of genius.

  10. "I Don't Have Feathers." All the way. It's a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I actually thought Tractor Troll looked great.

I also really liked The Princess of Cross-Section Kingdom, and The Big Blizzard.

Lots of good ones this year, it was hard to choose!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Groundimus Hogg looks like such a fun book. I know my 7 year old would pit it right off the shelf without my even having to encourage him. Also-we make a HUGE deal of Groundhog's Day at our house-big party and all- and there just aren't enough Groundhog things out there.

I know we're just supposed to pick 1, but my very close 2nd is Toe Truck. I think that one could be a lot of fun to look at-and my kids are always asking why some words are so funny.

So, here's the two that just by the ideas I would buy and put on my shelf.

    Thanks for the marathon.

  13. Very interesting picks so far! I always assume the posts with the most comments will be the most voted as well. Interesting to see that is not the case. Keep those picks coming!

  14. I am 9 blocknapped

    ReplyDelete
  15. Man, I can't decide either. There was some very clever thinking there Nathan. I like Caveman Carpool, The Hungry Computer Virus, The Fort that got us Grounded, The Big Blizzard, and Tractor Troll. Sorry, I made way too many picks, but I could't pare it down.

  16. It's a tie between The Big Blizzard and The Fort That Got Me Grounded.

Although my son would like to vote for Shorp 'til you Dorp, which he has been saying over and over and over since he saw it . . .

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Fort that Got Me Grounded

I don't just want to read the book, I want to build the fort!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I vote for the Big Snow! I mean Blizzard.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with Q when I say that I would REALLY love to see a Rapunzel & Jack #3 story.

But I really love the Kid Mercury idea.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wow! These were all so good.
I vote for The fort that got me grounded.
(Closely followed by The hungry hungry computer virus and Blow, wind, blow.)

    ReplyDelete
  21. The fort that got me grounded.
Last weekend my granddaughter and my nephew piled up all of her toys and put a tent on top of them and then climbed in on top of them. Your fort looks facinating.

  22. Fort
    Flap Flap
    Blizzard
    My rroom is so dirty..

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, I'd have to say Blocknapped. Since people are posting multiples I also like Blow Wind Blow and My Room Is So Dirty.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1-The fort that got me grounded
    2-The big blizzard
    3-My room is so dirty

    ReplyDelete
  25. I asked my children (9 and 7) which were their favorites were and they chose "The Fort That Got Me Grounded" and "Very Hungry Computer Virus". Although, being a homeschooling Mum I appreciate creative ways to impart knowledge and think the Volcano House and Cross-Section Kingdom could be good for that. This was fun to watch! Thanks.

  26. Definitely the "Fort that got me grounded"

  27. hello! im a follower of your blog and a big fan of your art work :) (still waiting for punzie to make a come-back!) and i've awarded you an award. you can collect this 7 facts award by going on my blog, it is the most recent post as of today. have fun with it!

  28. Punzie and Jack 3!

Hey, where's all the Table Tennis Tarsier love? Just think of the sequel potential in that one.

But for really real, I'd love to see you do a wordless picture book. You're so good at big spreads that keep kids looking, like the living room in Devil You Know and playground spread in Yellowbelly. I think the Big Blizzard would be really wonderful, and would tap into that fort love. Not sure that's best for a blog treatment, but I think it's worth pitching to a publisher for sure. But what do I know? All my picture books get rejected.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Fort that Got me Grounded!

And my second pick would be Wiener Cat.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "The Fort that Got Me Grounded" sounds like my childhood--nay, my lifelong--dream come true. I want to see that one!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Despite being almost too torn to vote. Seriously...the cross section was awesome, the groundhog appeals to the fantasy writer in me, the argumentative dinosaurs that talk back to the narrator makes me happy...but, in the end I have to say...

The Fort That Got Me Grounded!

    Ouch!
Yep, that hurts the parts of me that are leaning toward the others.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The Fort That Got Me Grounded.

(Although I also really like Blow Wind Blow, and I think my son would get a kick out of Toe Truck)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Best title: Rock and Roll Tractor Troll.

Best Concept: The End. (REALLY, you should do this one!)

    Shelley

    ReplyDelete
  34. Um, all of them?
But seriously, my vote goes to The Princess of Cross-Section Kingdom, for the artwork potential alone.

My runners-up were Nut Ninjas, The Big Blizzard (this one would be stunning), The Three Little Trilobites, and The End.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Shorp til you Dorp and Blocknapped are tied for me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nate, you are a genius!I vote for all of them. Actually, I think some smart editor (are you listening smart editors?) will publish all your covers in a collection. An annual collection. A monument to creativity and the ultimate writing prompt!

    ReplyDelete
  37. PS I know you can do it yourself, but if you want someone to write the texts for any of those stories, I know someone who would do it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I would love to read many of them, but the one that caught my intrest most is "The Fort that Got Me Grounded".

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would love to read many of the books. I am a picture book fan, even though all my kids are over 10yrs old.
"The Fort That Got Me Grounded" tickles my funny bone. Maybe because of all the fun forts I built and dreamed of.

  40. Gotta be the Princess of Cross-Section Kingdom. I want to read that book so bad!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I liked "The Fort That Got Me Grounded" and "Mercury Kid"

    ReplyDelete
  42. So fun; book cover marathon! I just followed your crazy talented wife's blog here and I HAVE been tricked out of my google reader lurking to vote. Sneaky.

The Fort that got me Grounded and The Big Blizzard are tied for me. Wordless stories are wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love Blocknapped and the Very Hungry Computer Virus! And so many others . . . but those are my top two.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Big Blizzard, Do Your Chores Kid Mercury, and The End are my top three. But I wish I could choose so many more!

    ReplyDelete
  45. The big blizzard. Or Blow wind blow. I liked that he had a Heath Robinson-esque thing going on.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The Big Blizzard. Runners up: Blow Wind Blow and Nut Ninjas. And, for sheer awesomeness of name, Groundimus Hog.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The Fort That Got Me Grounded!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Fort That Got Me Grounded, for sure! It sounds like every kid's dream.

Runners up? But I Don't Want to Have Feathers! and The Princess of Cross-Section Kingdom.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The Fort that got us Grounded

    ReplyDelete
  50. Since I have to choose, I pick Tractor Troll (I love the gnome, and the gleeful look the Troll gave while giving chase, and the juxtaposition of the mythical with the modern...), but Blow Wind Blow, The Big Blizzard, The End, The Fort that Got Me Grounded, Rock & Roll Tractor Troll, and But I don't want Feathers! all jockeying in as close runners-up!

    ReplyDelete
  51. If I could truly have my pick, it would be the rule-breaker: Rapunzel & Jack #3. I want to know how our fearsome duo became stranded on a flooded Easter Island.

But since I suppose that isn't possible, The Big Blizzard or Blow wind, Blow. I love the concepts of both!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I loved the fort one. And trilobyte. And anything with dinos. But particularly the fort. And second vote is the tow truck one.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm at a 3-way tie: I had a great laugh at "The Very Hungry Computer Virus," but I think I'd be most intrigued to read about the pillow fort. "Toe Truck" looks hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If I can ONLY pick one I guess I'll go with The Big Blizzard. But I can't go without saying that I love Blow Wind, Blow; The Fort that Got Me Grounded; and Shorping. (I also like My Room is SO Dirty, but can one of the kids be a girl? :P)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Nut Ninjas!! Kids will love it and I love the artwork!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. The fort that got me grounded, blow wind blow, and flap-flap vroom vroom tweet tweet

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think Blow Wind Blow would be a fun book :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love nut ninjas! and the fort that got me grounded! and wiener cat! In fact I love them all! You should publish all of them!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would love to see the Nut Ninjas.

    ReplyDelete
  60. My favorite is Blow Wind, Blow. My second favorite and my mom's favorite is The Fort that Got Me Grounded.

    ReplyDelete
  61. My absolute favourite is "Do Your Chores, Kid Mercury!" --for me, you topped yourself with the first book and while I liked others, they didn't come close to beating it.

Runner ups are The Big Blizzard (Which is _so_ pretty!), The Fort That Got Me Grounded, and Shorp til you Dorp. I really quite want a shorping center of my very own, it would be wonderful in terms of getting rid of all my excess STUFF!

And I love the idea and that you designed all these books. I can't wait to see whichever gets chosen!
