The Land of Doom/Picture Book Marathon 22/28

Monday, mile 22--phew, these last miles are hitting hard. Once again, to stay on top of the marathon, I'm skipping today's LAND OF DOOM. I've got one in sketch form, it'll be up tomorrow--the LAND OF DOOM may stretch out longer than the Picture Book Marathon--I've got a lot of material, and only a few more days. We'll see how it goes.

Book #22:

Title: "No Touch the Ground"

Synopsis: The picture book version of one of my favorite games as a kid, "No Touch the Ground" a.k.a. "Hot Lava" a.k.a. "Climbing on the Furniture." This one would be a wordless book. Each page featuring a room in a house, with a different reason why you can't touch the ground; 10,000 foot drop (seen here on the cover) pools of lava, snake pit, etc.

What did you call this game? Anyone else call it "No Touch the Ground?"

  1. I think I called it: 'The Ground is Poison.' Lots of fun.

  2. I wonder if this is one of those games that we learned from someone older than us, or if every child in the world comes to this independently at some point.

We called it "can't touch the ground."

Great job at LTUE, by the way. You were highly entertaining and I'm very glad I purchased Rapunzel's Revenge for my son.

  3. We called it: The Floor is LAVA!!!!

  4. My boys call it, "Quick, Mom's out of Earshot! Let's Walk on the Furniture!"

Not to be a killjoy or anything, but, well actually, yeah that's my job!

  5. I think we also called it "The Floor is Lava."

I distinctly remember my brother and cousins putting my stuffed animals all around the house while playing the James Bond soundtrack, having to gather up each animal without touching the floor.

Mostly because I thought they were weird.

  6. For us, it was usually alligators. Sometime it was lava, sometimes a raging river of death. We had the perfect living room for the game, too. We could circumnavigate the room if we installed a small island (usually a footstool) between the end table and the piano bench. Sometimes we floated in laundry basket boats. Mom allowed the activity as long as we took our shoes off. But swinging on the drapes like Tarzan was frowned upon.

  7. “Don’t touch the ground”, best game ever!

  8. I vaguely recall complicating matters slightly by attempting Don't Touch The Ground while zipped up in a sleeping bag...

  9. Nice! Wow, so many different names...I'm not gonna lie, I have a strong urge to go play this game right now.

  10. "Hot lava." I don't have any siblings close in age, though, so I just called it that in my own head.

  11. My kids call it "Hot Llama!" (We don't correct them because we think it is so funny.)
I really like this idea. It reminds me of another game I used to play, but I'm not telling because I'm going to use it for my idea of the day.

  12. Hot Llama rules! Llamas are inherently funny. I know my kids are big on that "Llama, Llama, Red Pajama" book. But I like Hot Llama.

  13. "No touchy". So much fun!

  14. We called it, "Sharks in the water!"

  15. I have always wanted to play this game, which my friends called "Don't Touch the Ground!" But all the tables in our house growing up had glass tops. . .

  16. I want this book!! I love that game!!

  17. Fun! We played that game, and so do my kids.

  18. I would love to buy this book! Me and my sibs would play this with a slight twist at the park. We called it "Lava monster," and added in a monster that would be it and try to catch the other players. Added an extra adrenaline rush to the game :)

  19. When my mom and dad were in deep conversation, my sibs and I would go to the living room and play 'Switch it', where you had to run from couch to couch, with only five seconds to get to each couch. And it was hard! We had a HUGE living room. But there were no other rules.... Though, it was really fun! Oh man, I remember tons of other games.... 'Switch it' was our favorite though.

  20. So much fun. xD My sisters and I had the name "Lion King" because of the scene at the end of Lion King II where Simba has to leap from rock to rock over a raging river to rescue Kiara!

  21. Often we were jumping over fire or lava, because our natural history museum (Albuquerque NM!) had a volcano room with "lava" under a glass floor--very scary.
But other times it was cliffs, or rushing water with alligators (reenacting scenes from My Father's Dragon).

Incidentally, Amazon has hardcover The Devil You Know for under $7 right now. I'm not sure if that is a long-term or short-term deal.

Also, in my amazon search (I was looking to see if robo christmas had been entered yet--it hasn't, obviously) I saw that you are the second hit for "Nathan Hale" after the famed revolutionary war spy. Is that coincidence or is there a connection there?

  22. This is a great idea! I loved playing that game and wordless picture books rock!

  23. That would be a cool book.

  24. Great idea. We always just said, "Let's pretend we can't touch the ground" and then we would make up a reason why. Our favorite was to pretend it was sewer. Yeah. Girls. Sounds like a boy thing, huh.

  25. We called it "Doggy Dropped It".

  26. We called it "World War Bun". No idea why.
